Kaleidoscope of a South African Field

This idea came one night at midnight as a clear picture in a dream. The next day I painted it with quite some emotions as it spoke as life seemingly dead under the surface of the land yet coming back to the light and though now transparent yet magnifying its bygone colours on all the land.

The contrasting colours of orange and blue in my palette spoke of the heat and the coolness of life, like between the hot sand and the water of the sea. SO were born the feet, dancing, marching or relaxing on the edge between the two colours.

Painting these flowers was returning back to a time in my life when I played in my parent’s nursery, putting plants into pots with the workers. Smelling the fresh and clean soil, touching the velvety leaves and the strange hairy roots, all this in the soil and voila, they can grow!

The challenge was to paint delicate spices displayed on a rough wall. I chose to combine the real colours with a contrasting one, the cerulean blue, to lift the vibrancy of the spices and containers.

A Trio of White Geraniums on French Ultramarine Velvet Blue

A classy lover of the blue colour wanted some white flowers to match her living area. Hanging there now you see a new vibrancy on her walls even though the blue seems icy. The sharpness of this blue opens up a window of her imagination about “spring over the deep sea”.

Three Posies in Vases

Emotionally driven to touch the paint or the reality of the painting, a client asked for flowers that seemed to be “jumping out of the canvas”. So I created these vases, first with a green chalk, and then painted in oil over it to gain this transparency and the glass thickness of the vases. With the use of a knife and special adjuvant in the paint, the flowers took shape with their petals standing out for her to touch and dream of her future flower garden.

A Donkey Cart In South Africa

This commission was requested by a lady who lived in rough circumstances in Namibia and held a great admiration for donkeys all her life. The details that were required to complete this painting were that the painting must portray joyful colours and be somehow textured enough for one to be able touch its roughness, which I did in the leaves of the trees.
