A Donkey Cart In South Africa
Oil on canvas
50cm x 78cm
This commission was requested by a lady who lived in rough circumstances in Namibia and held a great admiration for donkeys all her life. The details that were required to complete this painting were that the painting must portray joyful colours and be somehow textured enough for one to be able touch its roughness, which I did in the leaves of the trees.

Colette’s Blue Geranium

While visiting my family in France, I was given all the necessary tools to paint some flowers in the mood of the house. There was born what I call the Blue Geranium now decorating a wall next to Arcachon in France.

Seagull Discussion in Hermanus
Oil on canvas
35cm x 46cm
On a miserable day, feeling too lonely, I went to the furthest point of Hermanus. A few minutes passed and a cloud of seagulls arrived. Some, seeing no movement, went and perched on poles and had quite a discussion up there as my painting took shape.

Bags of Coloured Cement in Morocco
Oil on canvas
55cm x 80cm
You thought it was spices? Not this time! While the rest of the world tends to paint their houses grey, in Morocco they bring life in colour over their houses. Can you pass by without taking a photo? I decided to record it on film and then paint its opened bellies.

A Red Flower in a Blue Street
Oil on canvas
90cm x 60cm
In one of the narrow streets of Chaouenne, I discovered that you can have all sorts of entrances: tall, small, blue or varnished, rich or less attractive. But what’s fascinating is that not one line is parallel! And some walls are built over ruins and all are covered with this blue cerulean paint, the street as well as the walls.

Blue Pots in Chaouenne
Oil with mixed medium
42cm x 59cm
If you don’t count the white as a colour, here I used only 2 colours (two blues and some yellow). The blue on blue, though not contrasting, speaks much about the owner’s love for her plants!

Around The Corner in Morocco
Oil with mixed medium
91cm x 60cm
Is this man really that tall? Here is the contrasting effect of the man of normal size but facing a typical servant door at the back of the house, pressed against two high linear walls. Will this man use the door, or will he turn around the corner?

The Kitten and The Old Scribe
Oil on canvas
77cm x 89cm
A friend of mine wanted this portrait of an old man, not knowing what else to have on the painting. While researching her brief, this version came up. I wanted the old manhood and the loneliness to be apparent. Once the painting started taking shape the idea came to me to add a companion, a contrasting figure, on his arm . . . a little kitten.
